Re: Andreas Athanasiou
The lines of communication remain open between the Detroit Red Wings and forward Andreas Athanasiou.
General manager Ken Holland spoke briefly with Athanasiou's agent, Darren Ferris, Thursday in Arizona, during the Red Wings-Coyotes game and hopes he and coach Jeff Blashill can speak with Athanasiou by phone this week.
Athanasiou is skating with HC Lugano in Switzerland while assessing his options.
Both sides remain dug in. The Red Wings are holding firm on their offers to the restricted free agent - two years at $1.9 million per season or one year at $1.25 million, which would enable earn more next season through arbitration.
Athanasiou's camp doesn't appear to have come off its asking price of $2.5 million per season.
The Red Wings aren't actively shopping Athanasiou but are listening to offers, which is standard operation procedure. A source said they haven't received anything that intrigues them and are prepared to let him sit out the entire season rather than accept a substandard return.
But the club's top priority is to sign the fast-skating winger.
If Athanasiou, 23, doesn't sign with an NHL club by Dec. 1 he will ineligible to play in the league this season. He also would find himself in the same predicament next summer, as a restricted free agent with no arbitration rights.
He is losing money by the day and the Red Wings aren't inclined to increase their offers, which are based on several comparables, players of similar age and statistics (Athanasiou has 27 goals and 43 points in 101 games).
Holland met with Athanasiou and Ferris in Toronto on Sept. 16. He assured Athanasiou he would play on one of the top three lines and be part of the power-play and penalty-killing units. He also told Athanasiou that Blashill planned on giving him 15-16 minutes of ice time per game, up from 13:28 last season and 9:01 during his rookie year.
Ferris said in late August that Athanasiou was contemplating offers from the KHL . He reportedly has an offer from Avangard Omsk, after AK Bars Kazan rescinded its offer. But the Russian league is one-third of the way through its season and the fact Athanasiou hasn't moved on any such offer indicates his reluctance to want to play there.
The Swiss league could be an option, but he would earn only a fraction of what he would make in the NHL (the top salaries are believed to be around $400,000). He could sign a deal with a Swiss team that includes an opt-out clause if he's able to reach an agreement with the Red Wings by Dec. 1.
Neither Holland or Ferris could be reached for comment.

Tutto molto interessante (tranne l'errore sui salari massimi in Svizzera).
