Former Faribault's Shattuck-St. Mary's players, Brady, Jordy and Sarah Murray reunited in Lugano

From left, Brady, Jordy and Sarah Murray stand in the Old Rink after practicing at Shattuck-St. Mary’s last week. All three children of one time SSM coach Andy Murray will be playing professional hockey in Lugano, Switzerland, in the fall. (Josh Berhow/Daily News)
The decision Jordy Murray made in April, if nothing else, will slash the amount of time his parents spend in a plane or car in the near future.
Murray signed a contract with HC Lugano, a professional hockey team in the Swiss Elite League located in Lugano, Switzerland. The deal reunited Murray with his brother, Brady Murray, a 27-year-old forward. It also put all three Murray siblings — sister Sarah, 24, plays on the HC Lugano Ladies Team — in the same city for the first time since all three were students at Shattuck-St. Mary’s. Even then it was 10 years ago — when Brady was a junior at SSM and the other two were at the middle school — when their home was in the same town at the same time.
“To have all three kids all playing professional hockey, that’s a pretty big deal I think,” Brady said. “(Our parents) are both happy for us.”
“They’ll save a little money on the travel expenses,” Jordy said. “I think they are pretty excited to have the family together again; that’s pretty nice.”
The siblings’ dad is Western Michigan coach Andy Murray, who had stints as the head coach of the Los Angeles Kings and St. Louis Blues. He also coached HC Lugano at one time.
At 22, Jordy has never had the chance to play on the same team as his brother. He will in August when they return to Lugano for training camp and in September when the season starts.
“He had a good year and wanted to get a little more money,” Brady said. “He wanted to play with me, too —maybe — so he made the switch.”
“That was a huge part,” said Jordy of the possibility of playing with his brother. “Ever since Shattuck I always wanted to play with him. I was hoping it would work out last year but it didn’t, and when the opportunity came up this year I kind of jumped at it.”
Although the three are happy to be reunited, they still act like siblings. Sarah, who is returning to Lugano for her third season this fall, and Jordy will live together during the season. Will the oldest, Brady, be living with them as well?
“No,” he said. “Definitely not.”
