On August 24, Japanese consumer-electronics Toshiba announced plans to launch the world's first 3D TV that does not require special glasses, as soon as this holiday season. Shortly afterwards, Sony reacted by announcing that it too is developing its own technology for glasses-less TV, although it doesn't have a definite launch date.
According to the Yomiuri Shimbun, Toshiba's technology emits rays of light at different angles, allowing viewers' brains to recreate 3D images without special glasses. The new technology also will enable viewers to enjoy 3D content from numerous viewing positions, and the images will not strain the eyes.
Sony, however, considers that there are cost and technology hurdles to overcome before glases-less TVs can be put on the market. "Seeing 3-D without glasses is more convenient," Sony Senior Vice President Yoshihisa Ishida said Thursday at Tokyo headquarters. "We must take account of pricing before we can think about when to start offering them."
